BABSEA Mourns Tragic Loss of Cambodia Country Director In Memoriam - SIL Sineng
1967 - 2009

Mr. SIL Sineng

BABSEA is very sad to announce that our beloved Cambodia Country Director Sil Sineng passed away suddenly in the early morning hours on Friday October 9, 2009. The cause of death is unknown and those of us who knew and loved Sineng are still slowly coming to terms that this has happened. It is due to Sineng's wisdom, skills, commitment and leadership that BABSEA was able to build and strengthen our Cambodia Country Program over the past several years.

Sineng was a pillar of the NGO community in Phnom Penh and of his own community in Takeo province, where he is widely loved and respected. He dedicated himself to the service of others - his family, his community, his society. He imagined a better Cambodia society than the one he saw around him and he spent his entire adult life working to create it through community development, community organizing, education and social work. Besides his instrumental role in building BABSEA Cambodia, he also founded the community-based organization Meakea Aphiwadh in Takeo; he served on the Board of Directors of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) in Ratanikiri; he was President of Rotary Club of Phnom Penh Metro; and he was an adjunct professor at the new Faculty of Social Work at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He was a humble servant of his society and he inspired everyone around him to follow his example. We at BABSEA and the thousands of people he touched with his life's work are going to miss Sineng so dearly.

Sineng leaves behind a very caring wife and three beautiful children. To honor Sineng and his contribution to creating a better Cambodia, we are taking up a collection to help cover funeral expenses and to help his wife reduce the financial shock caused by this awful loss. BABSEA will also establish a scholarship fund in Sineng's memory, which will provide free tuition for needy children and young adults for all levels of education, beginning with Sineng's two school-aged children. If you would like to honor Sineng by making a donation, please click the link below and select the Sil Sineng Scholarship Fund from the drop down menu.

We would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of condolences and offered their support, which we will pass on to Sineng's family.

With immense sadness,

The BABSEA team
