This years VW camper challenge through Ireland raises support for BAB Cambodia (July 25 2007)
A convoy of VW camper vans touring through the countryside is a sight that may draw a few second glances across Ireland this August. For the second year running, the 10 day eireball charity run, of around 30 classic camper vans will drive a total of 1,375 miles around the coast of Ireland to support Bridges Across Borders’ projects in Cambodia. Event organizers, VW enthusiasts and recent newly-weds Tony and Jacinta volunteered with BAB in 2004-2005 and went back to Ireland to form the Building Bridges charity, which supports BAB's Cambodia projects. They are have high hopes that this year’s donations from the charity drive will be as successful as last year's challenge, which raised an impressive 10,000 Euros.
The proceeds from last years' hugely successful fundraising event were directed to support Bridges Across Borders’ water project in Kompong Speu province. The dam and reservoir construction, funded entirely by the proceeds from the 2006 eireball event, reached completion last month. This initiative will ensure that families in a remote Cambodian village will receive a reliable source of water during the dry season. The 78 families who will benefit from the new water source were also provided home water filters and training on how to use them this month.
Bridges Across Borders Cambodia, in partnership with Building Bridges in Ireland are working tirelessly to alleviate extreme poverty and reduce the vast wealth divide across the globe. We wish the drivers the best of luck for this year’s eireball, and look forward to putting the results of good fun in Ireland to good work in Cambodia! |
